He is one of the major greats. His career throwing yardage tops 65,000. He has 169 wins. He's tossed 464 scoring passes. And he's been one of the most durable performers in any pro arena and especially in the NFL. He has announced the end of his career and retracted that. For sheer drama, the sportwriters like to follow him. So do the supporters; no one has put more wholesale jerseys in fans' sports closets than the exceptional #4, Brett Favre. When he was the quarterback of the Green Bay Packers for 16 long years, the stands sometimes appeared as if jersey wholesalers had run out of every other jersey choice.
He's still making headlines. When his 16 years at Green Bay ended in 2007, Favre was sent packing to the New York Jets. The trade was an sad departure, but Favre was cheered in New York with delirious enthusiasm. On the day of the statement that he would lead the Jets, more wholesale jerseys with Favre's name on them were sold than in the preceding several months collectively. He started strong with the Jets, but a muscle tear disabled him and he announced his retirement again. Surgery on his right shoulder would ensue.
But all the while his eyes were looking westward. He had made no secret of his desire to suit up for the Minnesota Vikings, Green Bay's main rival. And on again - off again discussions with Minnesota occurred during the spring of 2009. By May, stories were plentiful that he'd be quarterbacking the Purple, but nothing was finalized. News sources reported that it was either a finalized contract or still pending or all over. Jersey wholesalers had either begun to stock up on jersey #4 in Viking colors, or no one had given permission for that yet. Vikings followers would either show up in wholesale jerseys with the former competitor Favre on their backs or look once again to their not very strong line-up of unknown quarterbacks.
The fact that Green Bay and Favre were equivalent to the Vikings' cheesehead enemies did not seem to dim the Minnesota fans' eagerness for greeting Favre with a Vikings' jersey. Some see the whole saga as a sad account of an exceptionally towering athlete who does not stop when he is ahead and so one of the most exceptional careers in sports history will end in pathos. Others think Favre will still live up to his own unique standards.
As of right now, it seems that a contract between Brett and Minnesota is almost set, depending only upon whether the sore shoulder recovers enough to allow him to use the arm freely. Favre has begun working out and he reports that the shoulder is "okay" but says "okay" is not good enough for the NFL. Keep your eye on this one!
